- WHAT PICTURES ARE ACCEPTABLE?
Photographs must be of a class, group (such as the Chorus), or an athletic
team from a Manhatttan school. Preferably, the
photo will be the type taken professionally and sold to the students.
Yearbook pictures may be accepted, but only when scanned with special handling.
(See "Scanning Specifications" below.) Typically, yearbook photos are
not accepted.
Photos of single individuals are not accepted.
Photographs should be at least 10 years old. Exceptions will be made
when the subject matter merits it.
- HOW DO I GET THE PICTURES TO THE MANHATTAN BOARD?
Your picture must be scanned using a flatbed scanner.
Scanned photographs should be emailed as separate, binary attachements to:
- CAN I TAKE A PICTURE OF THE ORIGINAL WITH MY DIGITAL CAMERA?
No. This method doesn't work because it distorts the perspective and doesn't provide even lighting.
- WHAT ARE THE SCANNED IMAGE SPECIFICATIONS?
Size: | 800x600 pixels, or as close to this as you can get. Slightly larger is OK, but smaller is not. |
Density: | 300dpi (dots per inch) |
File format: | JPG ("jay-peg") |
Because of the variety of scanners and their supporting software, you'll
have to figure out how to achieve these results on your own. It is very much
worth your while to learn how to use your scanner software to modify these settings!
The ONLY file format we accept is JPEG (".jpg").
Please do not send any other format, such as "bmp", "gif",
or images stored within word-processor documents ("doc", or "pdf").
- IMPORTANT SCANNING TIPS AND GUIDELINES
- Trim or crop the area being scanned! Please don't include the unused scanner background with the image you send.
- Is your picture black and white? If so, make sure you save the image as
a "grayscale" image, and not as a full-color one. This will reduce the
size of the resulting file. This holds true for sepia-toned prints or
those that have turned brownish with age. Save them as grayscale files.
- If the size of the file containing your picture turns out to be larger
than 500,000 bytes (approximately 500k), then it does not conform to the
above specifications. Please do not send enormous files!
- Scans of pictures from yearbooks, magazines or newspapers pictures require a
"descreening" filter to be applied by your scanning software.
If you can't do this, please don't send yearbook, magazine or newspaper scans.
- Please do NOT scan any text that might appear with your photograph.
Scanned text will drastically increase the size of the resulting image
file. It will be edited out completely if sent.
- If your original photo is too large for your scanner, then simply scan it in two or three parts. Make sure there is always an area that is common to every two adjacent parts, and scan each part with the identical settings. Send the parts and we'll reassemble them for you!
- Please do NOT edit the scanned image by overlaying it with text to identify the students! This completely ruins the image we wish to preserve!
- IDENTIFY WHAT YOU'RE SENDING!
Photographs should be accompanied by a narrative that includes at least
your name, the school name, the year, and the class. Other details are welcome.
If you know the names of any of the students, feel free to list them.
Please send your narratives as TEXT only - no MS Word or other
word-processor files, please!

Top Row: Joe Smith, Fred Mertz, Mary McGee, Chris Terfor
Middle Row: Tom Thumb, Sue Mee, Flip DaBird
etc...

- IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE?
Unless you request otherwise, your name and city/state will be included
in a "submitted by" caption along with the photograph.
We can not guarantee that your pictures will be published in the gallery.
Photos are subject to editing, cropping and other manipulation necessary
to make them conform to gallery standards.
Depending on the volume of submissions, it may take anywhere from an hour
to a few weeks to process your picture. You'll receive an acknowledgement
when your submission is received, and another message when it's
either accepted or rejected.
